Small businesses do much more than keep our local economy moving. They also give many young people their first start in the workforce.
A first shift in a café, shop or local business teaches skills that last a lifetime: turning up on time, dealing with customers, working in a team and taking responsibility.
That is why the latest signs from business are concerning.
Business NSW reports that hiring intentions have fallen to a record low. With costs rising and conditions tough, many businesses are understandably cautious about taking on another employee. Too often, it is the extra casual shift, junior role or first job for a school leaver that disappears.
Yet businesses that are willing to hire face another challenge. Business NSW’s State of Skills 2026 report found three in four NSW businesses are struggling to find the workers they need. Half expect skills shortages to cost them customers or commercial opportunities.
It is a difficult combination: businesses are hiring less because conditions are tough, while those wanting to grow cannot always find the right staff.
For young people, this matters enormously. Small business has long provided that vital first step into employment, helping build skills, confidence and independence.
We need to make it easier for small businesses to employ people and easier for young people to develop the skills employers need. That means keeping taxes, regulation and government charges under control, while ensuring training better connects people with real job opportunities.
A strong small business sector is not just good for our economy. It is one of the best pathways we can give the next generation into work.
